‘So often, in the past, a visit to a bookshop has cheered me and reminded me that there are good things in the world.’

Vincent van Gogh, October 1877

Lots of people have been looking at the page headed ‘A bit about us’, so I thought that I’d put in a bit more about the shop.

The building dates back to the eighteenth century, and has been many different shops in the past, most recently the Thames and Cotswold bike shop.

We are completely refitting it, with wooden shelving, largely wooden flooring, and between 7000 and 8000 of the best books that we could find. Not as easy or straightforward as it sounds! It’s about 700 sq ft, which is actually pretty small, especially when it’s full of stuff, but we’re trying to make it feel as roomy as we can

We’ve also decided to be as independent as we possibly can, which means that we are not reliant on any single publisher or wholesaler – or their systems.
